Stephen is delighted to have given his film its world premiere in Edinburgh. “I’ve always been interested in small character and emotional films. I encouraged him to do so and six weeks later there was a screenplay. “He had talked about what had happened with his sister and that he had been thinking of writing it. When I directed him on True Blood, we had an extraordinary shorthand. Stephen said: “I wanted to work with Denis. They recruited Sex and the City’s Cynthia Nixon, Melissa Leo, Rhys Ifans and Ed Asner for the drama all about a troubled family who gather after a sister’s suicide. The story was written by their pal and former co-star Denis O’Hare, inspired by incidents in his own life. Stephen, who had been known for NY-LON, Waking the Dead and Casualty before his stateside breakthrough, has always wanted to direct films.Īnd with the couple immersing themselves in the production side of the business after leaving the underworld behind, he was delighted to find the script for The Parting Glass. Joe and I are very close and I just said to him to go for it, man, don’t feel like you need to worry about me, and Anna and I had a chat about it. Stephen said: “I distinctly remember that scene. “It’s really not weird being directed by Stephen. The actress said that because Stephen had cut his teeth shooting episodes of True Blood, which involved shooting her in graphic scenes with co-stars Alexander Skarsgard and Joe Mangianello, being directed by him in the new indie was a piece of cake.Īnna said: “We did a season premiere which Stephen directed which had a pretty intense sex scene with me and Joe, and once you been directed in these circumstances, with a naked bloodied man and having wild sex with someone else, nothing’s weird any more.
